“Night” By Ellie Wiesel

-Why do you think Wiesel chose to call his memoir Night? What might be the significance of that title?

I think Wiesel chose to call his memoir Night because he was writing about such a dark time in his life and suck a dark time in history. The significance of the title is that it is very person time of Ellie, it represent a strong symbol throughout the book. He feels that the night time is the only time where he can feel safe from being selected for his death ,so he treasures the hours of darkness.

-Wiesel includes statements and reactions from other prisoners, the head of the block, and the veterans of the camp that reveal different perspectives about life in the concentration camp. Identify examples of these different perspectives and explain what they reveal about the prisoner's ordeal.

In lines ,"The veterans told us: "You're lucky to have been brought here so late. Today, this is paradise compared to what the camp was two years ago. Back then, Buna was a veritable hell. No water, no blankets, less soup and bread. At night, we slept almost naked and the temperature was thirty below..." The veterans of the camp had experience worst than what the new prisoners experience. The new prisoners experience was worse either way ,but imagine it much worse. The veterans are lucky enough to have survive for such a long time without getting selected for their deaths.

-Look back at the scene in which Wiesel must run before the SS doctors during selection (lines 83-86). Why does Wiesel repeat his thoughts, "you are too skinny, you are too weak"? How does the repetition help readers understand his experience?

Wiesel repeat his thoughts "you are too skinny, you are too weak" because he is doubting himself ,whether he is in a good condition to pass the selection test. He is preparing himself for the worst case. He is trying not to get his hopes up by expecting that he will pass the selection examination. The repetition help readers understand his experience by showing the readers the thoughts going through his head. He is unsure if he has looked fit enough to pass the doctor's selection examination.
