How is Odysseus different from other Epic heroes?
Odysseus is different from other Epic heroes are that Odysseus uses his intelligence to his advantage. Odysseus thinks before making his actions. It was Odysseus, who came up with the idea of the Trojan horse which ultimately won the Trojan war for the Greeks. In the end the battle win for the Greeks wasn't because the battle was skills of a great warrior ,but the intelligence of a great warrior.

How is Odysseus different than the men he travels with?
Odysseus is different than the men he travels with because Odysseus is quite the intelligent one out of his group of men. For an example when they were trapped  by the Cyclops, Odysseus was the one to come up with these intelligent plans to get him and his men out alive.

What are two recurring themes in the Odyssey?
Two recurring themes in the Odyssey are always to be prepared and perseverance. For an example for "always be prepared" when Odysseus and his men went to an enemy's territory to loot their riches and then they celebrated way too early. They weren't ready for the enemy's ambush in the end, Odysseus lost 72 of his men, a major lost.

What are the three possible inspirations for the Cyclops
-from prehistoric elephant skulls
-volcanoes (when the Greeks looked at an erupting volcano they thought it was a man with hot lava)
-a rare disease called Cyclopia

How did your understanding of the text and our Unit's focus on Survival change throughout your conversation?

Throughout my conversations with my classmates, my understanding of the text and the unit's focus on survival have changed. I state this because before we started reading this Unit I didn't really know what survival actually was in terms of "Is survival selfish." When think you are faced with that situation you would say, "When I am in a life or death situation, I will do everything I can to save everyone including myself" ,but when you are actually faced with that life or death situation you would probably act differently. When your'e faced with a situation like that you would never know how you would act unless you are currently living in the moment of that situation. That is my new view on the situation of survival. When I understand the text and the Unit through my conversion with my classmates then it would make my head thinking and then it would change my views on survival.

Jing Li

1. The narrator speaks of the 3 ways she owes her existence to her mother. Identify the three ways and the literary techniques used to reveal them.

The first time is when the mother saved herself. The mother and father were both trapeze artist. One day, a lighting struck the main pole in the tent that there were performing at. That strike killed her father, while her mother could have caught on to her father ,but she turned around to hold on to the pole to save herself. The literary technique that was used to reveal this is detail.

The second time that the narrator states she owns her life to her mother is when the mother was at the hospital and she found her second husband there. The father was a doctor at the hospital and every day he would come and read to here eventually they fell in love ,which lead to the narrator being born. The literary technique used to reveal this is detail.

The third time that the narrator owns her life to her mother is when the house caught on fire. The narrator was in the house when the fire started. She tried to escape from it ,but she was trapped by the fire. When the mother came home from work she stayed calm and she didn't hesitate to go in herself and save her daughter. The mother stripped and leap onto the window of the narrator's window in order to rescue her. The literary technique used to reveal this is figurative language. The word leap is referred to as her mother taking a literal leap in order to save her from the burning house.

2. Interpret two times that flashbacks or foreshadowing are used in the story to build suspense and tension. Cite specific lines.

In lines 30-32, "The day was mildly overcast, but nothing in the air or temperature gave any hint of the sudden force with which the deadly gale would strike." which foreshadows the tragic weather that caused the death of Harold Avalon. The weather shows no evidence of a thunderstorm ,but it did occur at the most crucial moment during the act where both trapeze artists were blindfolded. The lighting struck the main pole and the electricity strike Harry Avalon, which led to his death.

In lines 29-30, "Harold Avalon, her first husband" This foreshadows that Harold and the narrator's mother could be either divorced or the mother is a widow. This builds tension by leaving the reader's unknown of what might happen to Harold and how his part in this story plays out.

3. Draw conclusions about the relationship between the mother and daughter. How would you describe their relationship?

The relationship between the mother and daughter is that they have a deep love for each other. When the daughter was trapped inside of the farmhouse the mother risked her life to save her beloved daughter. The mother is illiterate ,but when she was in the hospital, she finally learned how to read and write ever since then she has never been without a book. Since the mother is practically almost blind because of her cataracts and ever since Harold passed away, there is no one to read to her. Therefore the daughter came home to read to her mother all night if she has too. Which shows how much the daughter loves her mother. They have such a strong mother-daughter bond.

Romeo and Juliet

In Romeo and Juliet the prologue had foreshadowed their deaths, They are said to be star crossed lovers who take their life. Its builds tension by making the readers read on and on to find out how it plays out which eventually leads to both of their deaths. The reader is expecting them to be dead by the end of the story ,but they do not know how or the paths they take that would lead them to a tragic ending. Another example of foreshadowing is when the prince says "your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace." The result of this foreshadowed line is at the ending of Romeo and Juliet, Lord Capulet gives Montague a jointure in an exchange for peace between the family. Montague accepts this peace offering as seen that Romeo and Juliet's lives were the forfeit of the peace. In addition, when Mercutio said to plague both of their houses it foreshadows what both of their families have in store for them in the near future. Which builds the tension of the reader wondering what would happen to the family.

“Night” By Ellie Wiesel

-Why do you think Wiesel chose to call his memoir Night? What might be the significance of that title?

I think Wiesel chose to call his memoir Night because he was writing about such a dark time in his life and suck a dark time in history. The significance of the title is that it is very person time of Ellie, it represent a strong symbol throughout the book. He feels that the night time is the only time where he can feel safe from being selected for his death ,so he treasures the hours of darkness.

-Wiesel includes statements and reactions from other prisoners, the head of the block, and the veterans of the camp that reveal different perspectives about life in the concentration camp. Identify examples of these different perspectives and explain what they reveal about the prisoner's ordeal.

In lines ,"The veterans told us: "You're lucky to have been brought here so late. Today, this is paradise compared to what the camp was two years ago. Back then, Buna was a veritable hell. No water, no blankets, less soup and bread. At night, we slept almost naked and the temperature was thirty below..." The veterans of the camp had experience worst than what the new prisoners experience. The new prisoners experience was worse either way ,but imagine it much worse. The veterans are lucky enough to have survive for such a long time without getting selected for their deaths.

-Look back at the scene in which Wiesel must run before the SS doctors during selection (lines 83-86). Why does Wiesel repeat his thoughts, "you are too skinny, you are too weak"? How does the repetition help readers understand his experience?

Wiesel repeat his thoughts "you are too skinny, you are too weak" because he is doubting himself ,whether he is in a good condition to pass the selection test. He is preparing himself for the worst case. He is trying not to get his hopes up by expecting that he will pass the selection examination. The repetition help readers understand his experience by showing the readers the thoughts going through his head. He is unsure if he has looked fit enough to pass the doctor's selection examination.
